Robots was created within YouthCO's AIDS Society and inspired by an educational tool developed by Chee Mamuk (New Work), the Aboriginal Program of the BC Centre for Disease Control.

Program Description:

A Youth Friendly HIV Prevention Tool

This interactive and dynamic educational tool answers the most common questions youth have about HIV transmission in a fun, accessible, and memorable way that appeals to a broad range of learning styles and age groups.

Designed by youth, for youth, Robots emphasizes the highest risk activities for HIV transmission and how to increase their safety, as well as the many ways that HIV CANNOT be transmitted, therefore reducing fear, stigma and misinformation.  It also provides an opportunity to discuss medium and lower risk activities, allowing youth to make informed decisions in relation to safer sex, drug use, and other behaviors.

Consisting of over 40 images of two cartoon robot characters engaged in various “risk activities”,  this HIV prevention tool can be customized to meet the needs of specific groups of youth, different learning environments, and participant numbers of as few as two and as many as 300.

Robots has proven highly successful with a diverse range of ages and in a variety of settings including High Schools and alternate programs, Post-Secondary classrooms, community organizations, youth groups, conferences and events.  Garnering extremely positive feedback from educators and professionals, it is designed to help meet BC Ministry of Education Prescribed Learning Outcomes related to HIV in Health and Career Education 8/9 and Planning 10 curriculums.

The Robots educational package includes a set of laminated images, a power point presentation, a teacher/facilitator’s guide, and a number of supplementary resources such as posters, stickers, and buttons.

Recommended for Grade 8/Age 12 and up.
